Our 2023 NHS Staff Survey results
Information and updates on the latest NHS Staff Survey results
NHS Staff Survey What is the NHS Staff Survey?
The NHS Staff Survey is a national survey that is designed to understand, help and improve the experience of staff working in the NHS.
All NHS Trusts have to participate in the annual NHS Staff Survey and last year, 6,783 (48%) of you used your voice to tell us about your experiences here at King’s. This was above the average response rate for both Acute, and Acute and Community Trusts, which was 45%.
2023 Staff Survey Results
The results of the Staff Survey are analysed and presented as themes, where ten is the highest score attainable. Our scores are benchmarked against the scores from other Acute, and Acute and Community Trusts.
There are seven themes aligned to the NHS People Promises, and two standalone themes of Staff Engagement and Morale. In the table below, you can see how compare as a Trust to our sector benchmarking group (which includes both Acute and Acute and Community Trusts):-
The results are also available at directorate, Care Group and specialty level, and detailed heatmaps have already been shared with each management team.
The national results are due to be available on the Staff Survey website, from 9:30am on Thursday 7 March 2024 - just search 'RJZ' on the website to find the results for King's.
How will the 2023 results be used?
The results will be used in two different ways; through local improvement plans, and to inform Trust-wide improvement actions.
Last year's results were shared with each Care Group and directorate, and the triumvirates or leadership teams are using these results to create an action plan for improvement – this will be recorded on a central action tracker, and supported and governed through site executive meetings.
On Monday, January 15, thirty-five colleagues representing various departments - including Organisational Development, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Quality Improvement, People Business Partners, Wellbeing, Freedom To Speak Up, Staff Psychology, Rewards and Recognition, Employee Relations, and Flexible Working - met to discuss this year's NHS Staff Survey, and action planning. Our focus was on identifying the support we can provide to help you implement the actions you would like to take based on the People Promise you choose to work on as a priority.
Useful materials to support your action planning
The NHS Staff Survey website has lots of information about the national survey, including results from previous years.
We've also organised Action Planning Workshops to assist you in formulating actionable strategies. These workshops serve a dual purpose: firstly, to deepen your understanding of the People Promises and the potential factors contributing to challenges in those areas, and secondly, to facilitate the exchange of ideas and mutual support in crafting effective action plans.
If you missed our action planning workshops, you can still access the recordings and slides below. The slides contain suggestions for actions you can take to improve your scores for each of the People Promises and their sub-themes along with details about available support. Additionally, you will find information on utilising a Quality Improvement (QI) approach to address your priorities effectively.
Why do we complete the survey?
The annual NHS Staff Survey is a great way to find out how people are feeling about working for us as a Trust. By participating, you increase our understanding of what is going well, and what we could do better.
